GARGOYLES (2025)

  • December 27, 2025

Fans of the iconic 1990s Disney animated series Gargoyles, prepare to take flight once more. One of the most ambitious, mature, and beloved cartoons of its time is officially being reimagined as a live-action series for Disney+, bringing the gothic world of the Manhattan Clan roaring into the real world.

Gargoyles originally aired from 1994 to 1997, spanning three seasons and 78 episodes as part of the Disney Afternoon block. Created by Greg Weisman, the show was a standout for its serialized storytelling, complex characters, Shakespearean influences, and surprisingly dark tone—qualities that made it far more than typical children’s programming. Blending mythology, science fiction, action, and moral ambiguity, it quickly built a passionate cult following that has only grown stronger over the decades.

At its heart, the story is timeless and powerful. In 10th-century Scotland, a clan of gargoyles serves as nocturnal protectors of a castle and its human inhabitants. By day they turn to stone, vulnerable and motionless; by night they awaken as fierce, winged warriors. After a devastating betrayal, a curse freezes them in stone for a thousand years. In 1994 New York City, billionaire industrialist David Xanatos purchases and relocates their ancient castle, placing it atop his Manhattan skyscraper. The spell breaks, and the clan awakens in a modern world they barely recognize.

Led by the noble and commanding Goliath, the Manhattan Clan consists of the wise elder Hudson, the impulsive second-in-command Brooklyn, the clever and tech-loving Lexington, the gentle but strong Broadway, the loyal beast-like Bronx, and eventually Goliath’s daughter Angela. They forge a crucial alliance with NYPD detective Elisa Maza—a courageous, quick-thinking human who becomes their guide, confidante, and bridge to humanity. Together, they defend the city from supernatural threats, criminal organizations, and personal enemies while struggling with questions of trust, prejudice, redemption, and what it truly means to belong.

The villains are just as compelling. Demona, Goliath’s former mate turned bitter immortal, harbors centuries of rage against humanity. David Xanatos is a charismatic, manipulative mastermind whose schemes drive much of the conflict. The original voice cast elevated the material to legendary status: Keith David’s deep, resonant performance as Goliath, Marina Sirtis as the tragic Demona, Jonathan Frakes as the cunning Xanatos, Ed Asner as Hudson, and a remarkable roster of Star Trek veterans and theater actors throughout.

In October 2023, Disney Branded Television announced the live-action adaptation for Disney+. The project is being executive produced by horror and blockbuster maestro James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring, Furious 7) through his Atomic Monster banner, with acclaimed horror screenwriter Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, It, The Nun, Swamp Thing) serving as writer and showrunner. This creative team signals a clear intent to preserve the series’ signature dark, gothic atmosphere while delivering high-stakes spectacle.

As of December 2025, the series remains in active development. Gary Dauberman has repeatedly stressed his reverence for the source material in interviews, describing the original as “already pretty dark… serialized, mature, operatic, and epic.” He has emphasized that he is not looking to reinvent the wheel but to capture the same powerful vibe fans felt watching it in the ’90s. Scripts are reportedly complete or well advanced, and the team is in discussions with potential directors and talent. While no official casting announcements or premiere date have been made yet, momentum appears strong, with Disney and the producers eager to move into production.

The potential for a live-action Gargoyles is enormous. Modern visual effects can finally realize gargoyles soaring between New York skyscrapers under moonlight, dramatic stone transformations at sunrise, and intense aerial combat in ways that were only dreamed of in animation. The themes of fear of the “other,” institutional betrayal, corporate power, and the search for family resonate even more deeply today, offering rich opportunities for contemporary storytelling without losing the mythic scope.

Unlike many Disney animated series aimed squarely at young children, Gargoyles never shied away from moral complexity—Demona’s heartbreaking descent into hatred, Xanatos’s charming amorality, and the clan’s constant struggle against human prejudice all gave the show a sophistication that influenced later animated hits like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Young Justice, and The Owl House.

With the full original series currently streaming on Disney+—where it has found an enthusiastic new audience—the demand for this adaptation has never been higher. Successful live-action fantasy adaptations like Percy Jackson & the Olympians have proven Disney+ can deliver epic, effects-heavy storytelling to broad audiences. Gargoyles has all the ingredients to become a flagship series blending thrilling action, emotional depth, and supernatural mystery.

Are you ready to hear Goliath declare “We are defenders of the night!” in live-action glory? Who is your favorite character—Goliath, Elisa, Demona, Brooklyn, or someone else? What episodes still give you chills after all these years? Share your memories, dream casting ideas, and excitement below. The stone is cracking… the clan is rising once again.
