Full Detailed Plot Summary

Opening – 9 years after the 1973 events (Year 1982)

Nine years after the disastrous 1973 expedition, Skull Island has been almost completely forgotten. Monarch’s files remain buried under the highest security clearance. James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston returning), the mercenary who survived the island, is now a middle-aged man scarred by trauma. He lives in seclusion in a small village in New Zealand, frequently tormented by nightmares of monsters and the deaths of his comrades. Conrad refuses every offer from the government, wanting only to leave the past behind.

Suddenly, a series of unusually powerful earthquakes strike the Pacific region. Monarch satellites detect that Skull Island is no longer hidden under its perpetual storm clouds. The eternal superstorm surrounding the island has begun to dissipate, revealing a horrifying sight: large parts of the jungle are burned, rivers and lakes have dried up, and Kong – the undisputed king of the island – is slowly moving toward the southern coast, as if fleeing or searching for something. More alarmingly, signs indicate that another colossal creature is awakening from deep beneath the island.

Monarch decides to launch one final mission to Skull Island before the U.S. military “erases” it with nuclear bombs to prevent Titans from spreading across the world. They recruit Conrad as the primary guide, despite his strong reluctance.

New Main Characters:

  • Dr. Elena Voss (Natalie Portman or similar powerful actress): A leading paleobiologist specializing in Titan behavior. She believes Kong is not an enemy but the “final gatekeeper” of Earth. Elena brings advanced bio-acoustic equipment to communicate with Kong through sound and gestures.
  • Captain Marcus Reeves (Idris Elba or a strong Black actor): Commander of Monarch’s elite task force, deeply skeptical of “befriending monsters.” He carries cutting-edge weaponry and has secret orders: if Kong becomes a threat, he must eliminate it.
  • Rebecca Shaw (Scarlett Johansson or a strong female war photographer): A Pulitzer-winning conflict photographer joining the mission to document the truth. She is the only one bold enough to question Monarch’s real motives.
  • Supporting team: A young geologist, several elite mercenaries, and a surviving native from the Iwi tribe (descendant of characters from the first film).

Main Plot:

The mission departs aboard advanced submarines and modern Black Hawk helicopters. As they approach Skull Island, they are hit by a sudden electromagnetic storm, causing many helicopters to crash. The survivors land on the southern beach – the same battlefield from 1973, now littered with the giant skeletons of Skullcrawlers and rusted plane wreckage.

They quickly realize the island has changed dramatically. The ecosystem is collapsing: trees are dead and withered, the perpetual clouds have vanished, leaving the land scorched by harsh sunlight. The remaining smaller creatures have become far more aggressive and attack the human team from the first day. Conrad leads them through familiar paths that are now filled with dangers: collapsed caves, toxic rivers, and mutated wildlife.

They encounter Kong once again. The giant ape is now even larger (approximately 120 feet tall), his body covered in both old and new scars, fur wild and matted, eyes weary yet still radiating absolute authority. Kong is no longer just a “lonely king” but appears to be protecting something. When the group approaches, he roars a warning but does not attack immediately. Elena uses her device to emit low-frequency sounds resembling the roar of Kong’s mother from years ago, temporarily allowing Kong to let them follow from a distance.

The Greater Threat Emerges:

Deep beneath Skull Island, an ancient Titan awakens. In the script, it is called Leviathan (also known as the “Abyssal Kraken” – a colossal creature blending giant octopus and sea dragon, lightly inspired by Cthulhu while fitting the MonsterVerse). Leviathan is not from Hollow Earth but a primordial guardian imprisoned for millions of years under the island’s crust. It has been awakened by underground earthquakes caused by secret deep-sea oil drilling operations around the island by a shadowy corporation.

Leviathan possesses the ability to control water and electricity, generating massive storms, tsunamis, and releasing toxins that mutate other creatures on the island: young Skullcrawlers grow larger with thin wings; giant snakes sprout additional heads; even some trees become sentient and predatory.

Kong has been fighting Leviathan repeatedly over the past years, which explains the island’s decline. Kong is heavily wounded, and his blood has altered the ecosystem. Kong is not fleeing but trying to lure Leviathan away from the island to protect his “home,” yet the creature’s power continues to grow.

Climax and Final Battle:

The human team becomes separated. Captain Reeves wants to use deep-earth bombs to destroy both Titans, viewing it as the “final solution.” Conrad and Elena strongly oppose him, believing only Kong can defeat Leviathan. Rebecca records everything, exposing Monarch’s many secrets about the Titans.

An epic battle erupts at the “Black Abyss” – a massive canyon leading deep into the island’s core. Leviathan rises from the ocean, its body stretching hundreds of meters long, tentacles wrapping around mountains, eyes glowing an eerie blue-green. It summons hordes of mutated monsters to attack the humans.

Kong charges into combat. The sequence features spectacular kaiju action: Kong smashes tentacles with his fists, leaps from cliff to cliff, and roars so powerfully the entire island shakes. Leviathan fires lightning bolts and sprays acid, severely burning Kong. The humans provide support: Elena uses loudspeakers to disrupt Leviathan’s nervous system, Conrad guides the team to plant explosives at a weak point (an old scar on Leviathan’s head caused by Kong years earlier), and Rebecca pilots a small helicopter to fire guided missiles.

In the chaos, Reeves betrays the group and attempts to detonate a mini nuclear device. Conrad engages in a brutal hand-to-hand fight with Reeves on a floating rock platform. In the end, Conrad convinces Reeves by reminding him of the 1973 tragedy: “We are not conquerors. We are only guests.”

Climactic Resolution:

Kong and Leviathan clash violently on the open sea. Kong is gravely injured and nearly dies. The human team detonates explosives, causing part of the canyon to collapse and bury Leviathan’s lower body. Kong seizes the moment, delivering a devastating blow to Leviathan’s head, tearing off its main tentacles and dragging it back into the abyss. Leviathan lets out one final roar before sinking deep into the earth, temporarily sealed once again.

Kong stands atop a mountain, looking down at the human survivors. He lets out a low growl – not in anger, but almost as a sign of acknowledgment. Elena weeps seeing Kong’s wounds. Conrad bows his head in respect. Kong turns away and retreats deep into the jungle to heal, but before leaving, he stares directly into Rebecca’s camera as if aware that history is being recorded.

Ending:

The surviving team is rescued by a recovery ship. Skull Island is once again shrouded in clouds, as if protecting itself. In the post-credit scene: Monarch detects a new signal from Hollow Earth – another portal opening, with the silhouette of yet another Titan (setting up future MonsterVerse films). Conrad says to Elena: “Kong is not the last monster. He is only the first guardian.”

Themes of the Film:

  • Humanity and nature: We cannot conquer it; we can only coexist or be destroyed.
  • The legacy of war: From Vietnam in 1973 to modern conflicts, humans always bring destruction.
  • The loneliness of a hero: Kong is a king, yet also a prisoner of his duty.

Estimated Runtime: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes, with 40% spectacular kaiju action, 30% exploration and horror, and 30% character development and drama.
