A serious traffic accident in a rural area of Independence County, Arkansas, left a motorcyclist dead and a state police officer injured. The crash occurred on the afternoon of September 4, 2023, during the Labor Day holiday, along U.S. Highway 167 near the intersection with Pfeiffer Road.
According to an Arkansas State Police fatal crash report, the collision happened at approximately 3:55 p.m. The motorcyclist was identified as 63-year-old Michael Owens of Batesville. Owens was riding a 2000 Yamaha motorcycle. The driver of the other vehicle was 36-year-old Brandon Trewyn of Newport, who was operating a 2020 Dodge Charger.
How the Collision Happened
The preliminary report stated that Owens was traveling from Pfeiffer Road and attempting to turn left onto southbound U.S. Highway 167. As he crossed the highway and entered the southbound lanes, his motorcycle moved into the path of the Dodge Charger, which was also traveling south.
After recognizing the danger, Trewyn reportedly steered the Charger to the right and left the main roadway in an attempt to avoid the motorcycle. However, the front of the car still struck Owens’ motorcycle.
Weather conditions were described as cloudy at the time of the crash, while the roadway was reported to be dry.
Owens suffered fatal injuries and did not survive the collision. Trewyn was injured and transported to White River Medical Center in Batesville for treatment. Local news reports later indicated that he was released from the hospital after receiving medical care.
Arkansas State Police confirmed that Trewyn was a trooper with the agency. Officials also stated that the police car’s emergency lights and siren had been activated before the crash.
