CONSTANTINE 2: THE DEVIL’S DUE (2026)

Genre: Supernatural Horror, Action, Dark Psychological Thriller

Director: Francis Lawrence

Screenplay: Akiva Goldsman & Sean Daniels

Main Cast: Keanu Reeves (John Constantine), Rachel Weisz (Angela Dodson), Djimon Hounsou (Papa Midnite), Tilda Swinton (Gabriel), and Peter Stormare (Lucifer).

Detailed Plot:

The film opens with torrential rain pouring down on Los Angeles in 2026. John Constantine, now in his 50s, with more gray hair and a visibly weakened body due to recurring lung cancer and scars from Hell, lives alone in his rundown apartment. He continues smoking heavily despite knowing he’s dying. Constantine is no longer a hero — he’s just a man trying to escape the “debt” he signed with Lucifer twenty years ago.

One night, while performing an exorcism on a young girl, Constantine witnesses a strange phenomenon: the darkness is not an ordinary demon but an ancient entity known as The Debt Collector, the embodiment of the soul debt Lucifer is coming to collect. The girl dies horribly, and with her last breath, she whispers: “You promised… The Devil’s Due must be paid.”

At the same time, at the Vatican, Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) — now a special agent investigating supernatural cases — discovers a wave of mass suicides across major cities. All victims left the same message: “Constantine owes.” Angela is forced to find John again, despite the years of emotional distance between them since the events of the first film.

They meet in a dimly lit bar. Constantine initially refuses to get involved, but when Papa Midnite (Djimon Hounsou) appears and warns that a massive Hell Gate is opening in Los Angeles, he has no choice but to join. Midnite reveals that Lucifer does not want to kill Constantine immediately. He wants him to watch the world collapse first. “He wants you to suffer before you die.”

The true harbinger of the threat is Balthazar — a half-demon, half-human hybrid portrayed with sinister charm. Balthazar reveals that Constantine had unknowingly signed a soul contract not only for himself but for “everyone he touches.” Every person he has ever saved is now being dragged into the cycle of repayment.

Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) returns, but this time the angel has partially fallen. Gabriel tells Constantine: “God has gone silent. Maybe He’s tired of humanity too.” Gabriel does not take sides, only wanting to witness the final outcome.

The plot escalates as a “soul plague” spreads: innocent people begin hearing whispers from Hell, leading to widespread violence. Los Angeles descends into chaos — car crashes, self-immolations, and people tearing each other apart. Constantine realizes this is the sign of The Rising — the first time since Biblical times that Hell is allowed to harvest souls on Earth on a massive scale.

John decides to perform a dangerous ritual: a deliberate descent into Hell to negotiate directly with Lucifer. The Hell sequence is the film’s strongest visual climax. Constantine must wade through the River Styx, confronting the souls of those he once saved, now tormenting him and blaming him for bringing disaster upon them.

Lucifer (Peter Stormare) appears in his familiar form — both charming and repulsive. He laughs: “You thought you could cheat death twice, John? This time I don’t want your soul. I want you to watch everything you love burn.”

Lucifer reveals a brutal truth: Angela is pregnant. The child is The Balance — a being capable of becoming a bridge between Heaven and Hell. If born under Hell’s influence, it will become the new Antichrist. If saved, it could bring one last hope. Lucifer had orchestrated everything from the beginning: Constantine saving Angela years ago created this very connection.

Constantine faces an impossible choice: sacrifice himself to save Angela and the child, or let the world fall apart so he can live a few more years.

The film builds to its climax at an abandoned burning church in the heart of Los Angeles. Balthazar summons a massive demon army. Papa Midnite sacrifices himself heroically to open a temporary portal. Gabriel betrays both sides, attempting to kill the child out of fear that the balance will be broken.

In the final battle, Constantine uses all his knowledge and blood to perform an ancient ritual: The Devil’s Due Ritual — transferring the debt from himself onto Lucifer himself. He exploits Lucifer’s own arrogance against him. Constantine delivers the iconic line: “You always wanted me to work for you. Now take your own debt.”

The climax is intensely dramatic: Constantine holds Angela, kisses her goodbye, then stabs a sword forged from his own charred bones into his chest. His blood forms a sealing circle, dragging Balthazar and the entire demon army back to Hell. Lucifer roars in fury but is forced to accept it — the laws of balance prevent him from intervening directly.

John Constantine dies in Angela’s arms. With his final breath, he smiles: “This time… I’m not coming back.”

Post-Credits Scene:

Six months later, Angela gives birth in a hospital. The baby cries normally. But when the nurse turns off the light, the child’s eyes flash with a golden demonic glow for a split second. The screen fades to black.

Open Ending: Is Constantine truly dead? Or will he find a way back like before? Has the final debt truly been paid?
