Pinocchio: Unstrung (2026) – The Beloved Puppet Becomes a Nightmare

The story of Pinocchio has traditionally been associated with childhood, honesty, and the dream of becoming a real boy. In Pinocchio: Unstrung, however, that familiar dream is transformed into something far darker.

Written and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, Pinocchio: Unstrung is a horror reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic character. The film is part of the Twisted Childhood Universe, also known by many fans as the “Poohniverse,” which turns well-known public-domain characters into frightening figures.

The movie had its world premiere at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in April 2026. Its North American theatrical release is scheduled for July 24, 2026. The principal cast includes Richard Brake as Geppetto, Cameron Bell as James, Robert Englund as the voice of Cricket, and Jessica Balmer in a supporting role.

A New and Disturbing Version of Pinocchio

The story centers on James, an orphaned teenager struggling with grief after losing his best friend to cancer. James lives under the care of his grandfather, Geppetto, a mysterious craftsman whose work appears to go far beyond ordinary woodworking.

Hoping to comfort his grandson, Geppetto introduces James to Pinocchio, a handmade wooden puppet possessing a soul of his own. Pinocchio is not simply a toy. He can move, speak, think, and develop feelings.

At first, James sees Pinocchio as a strange but welcome companion. The puppet’s innocence makes him curious about the human world, and a friendship begins to form between them. Geppetto, however, warns James not to take Pinocchio outside or expose him to the cruelty of other people.

The Sinister Influence of Cricket

One of the film’s most anticipated characters is Cricket, voiced by horror legend Robert Englund.

In traditional versions of Pinocchio, the cricket acts as the puppet’s conscience, encouraging him to choose honesty and kindness. Pinocchio: Unstrung reverses that familiar relationship.

This Cricket is not a gentle moral guide. He is a sinister influence who encourages Pinocchio’s darkest desires. Rather than teaching the puppet how to become a better person, Cricket appears to manipulate his innocence and strengthen his obsession with becoming real.

Robert Englund is best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. His distinctive voice and long history in horror make him a fitting choice for this unsettling version of Cricket.

The relationship between Cricket and Pinocchio adds another layer to the story. Pinocchio may commit terrible acts, but he begins as a naïve creation who does not fully understand the human world. Cricket recognizes that innocence and uses it for his own purposes.

As a result, the film raises an important question: Is Pinocchio naturally evil, or is he being corrupted by the people and creatures guiding him?

Geppetto’s Dangerous Secrets

Richard Brake’s Geppetto is also very different from the loving father figure audiences may remember.

He initially appears to be a grieving grandfather trying to help James. As the story develops, however, it becomes clear that Geppetto knows much more about Pinocchio’s soul and origins than he admits.

Richard Brake has frequently portrayed intense and intimidating characters, and his performance gives Geppetto a mixture of authority, guilt, and mystery. The character is not merely an innocent inventor whose creation becomes dangerous. He may have helped create the tragedy through his own ambition.

A Horror Story Set at a London School

Much of the film unfolds around an elite London preparatory school. This setting allows Pinocchio to encounter James’s classmates, teachers, and other people who influence the teenager’s life.

The school also creates a sharp contrast between appearance and reality. Behind its respectable image are bullying, secrets, social pressure, and adults who may not be as trustworthy as they seem.

Pinocchio observes these problems without understanding their complexity. To him, people are either good or bad. Anyone who hurts James becomes an enemy, and every act of cruelty appears to justify punishment.

This simple view of morality makes the puppet especially dangerous. He believes he is protecting someone he loves, even as his actions become increasingly destructive.

Practical Effects Bring Pinocchio to Life

Instead of relying entirely on computer-generated imagery, the filmmakers used extensive practical and animatronic effects to create Pinocchio.

The puppet was designed by MastersFX, with effects work supervised by Todd Masters. Puppeteers helped give the wooden character a physical presence, allowing him to interact directly with the actors and environments.

This practical approach makes Pinocchio feel like a real object occupying the same space as James and Geppetto. His wooden movements, unnatural expressions, and handcrafted appearance contribute heavily to the film’s disturbing atmosphere.

More Than a Simple Slasher

Although Pinocchio: Unstrung is designed as violent horror entertainment, its central ideas remain connected to the original fairy tale.

Pinocchio still wants to become a real boy. The difference is that his understanding of humanity has been corrupted. He sees human bodies as the possible answer to his transformation, while Cricket pushes him toward increasingly dangerous choices.

The film explores grief, loneliness, manipulation, and the desire to belong. James wants companionship after losing someone important. Geppetto wants to create life and control death. Pinocchio wants to become human without understanding what humanity truly means.

These desires bring the characters together, but they also lead them toward disaster.

With its practical creature effects, recognizable horror stars, dark school setting, and twisted interpretation of a classic story, Pinocchio: Unstrung could become one of the most distinctive entries in the Twisted Childhood Universe.

This time, Pinocchio’s greatest danger is not that his nose grows when he lies.

It is what he is willing to do to become real.
