The film opens on a snowy Christmas night in New York City, 2025. A family is gathered around their Christmas tree, joyful bells ringing. Suddenly, a window shatters, and a tall figure in a bright red Santa Claus suit bursts in, wielding a gleaming axe. He decapitates the father amid screams from the mother and daughter. Blood spreads across the white snow outside the window. The killer vanishes into the darkness, leaving a message written in blood: “Naughty!”. The scene cuts to the cozy Castle family loft, where Richard Castle and Kate Beckett are decorating the tree with their children—three playful kids running around. This is their first full-family Christmas in years, filled with laughter.
Cut to the first crime scene at a bustling shopping mall. The victim is a wealthy businessman, hanged with twinkling Christmas lights, his throat deeply slashed. Esposito and Ryan are investigating, while Lanie Parish confirms time of death around midnight. Beckett, now Captain of the 12th Precinct, gets the call and drags Castle—who’s excitedly writing a new chapter for his Nikki Heat series—to the scene. Castle looks at the body and immediately gets thrilled: “This is it! Killer Santa! Just like the classic horror film ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ I watched as a kid. A guy traumatized from childhood, witnessing his parents killed by a Santa-dressed robber, grows up to punish the ‘naughty’!” Beckett glares: “Rick, this is a real case, not your next book idea.”

The second murder happens just hours later: A wealthy woman shot dead at a company Christmas party, the killer disguised as Santa handing out gifts before pulling a gun. Another message: “Nice try, but you’re naughty.” The team discovers the victims share a common thread: Involvement in scandals—affairs, corruption, domestic abuse. The killer is enacting “Christmas justice” based on his own “Naughty List.” Castle dives into his horror movie knowledge, recounting the plot of ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’: Billy Chapman, a boy who saw his parents murdered by a Santa-clad robber in 1971, raised abusively in an orphanage, then snaps and kills the “wicked” on Christmas Eve.
The investigation leads to the first suspect: A former mall Santa actor fired for drunkenness. He has a weak alibi, but Castle realizes it doesn’t match the horror motif. The second suspect is a failed horror film producer who wanted to remake ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ but was rejected. Tension rises when Alexis receives a strange gift from “Santa” at the loft: A decapitated doll with a threatening note targeting the Castle family. Castle panics, recalling his own past and fearing the case ties to a deranged fan or old enemy.
Humor intersperses the investigation: Castle decides to dress as Santa to “bait” the killer, leading to a hilarious chase on slippery snowy New York streets. Esposito and Ryan bicker over who’s “nicer” to avoid being targeted. Martha Rodgers throws a grand Christmas party at the loft, but it’s halted when Beckett orders family protection.
The climax unfolds on true Christmas Eve at Rockefeller Center, where the massive tree glows under falling snow.

The killer is revealed: Eric Chapman, a distant relative of the original Billy (fictional twist). As a child, Eric witnessed his parents killed by a Santa-dressed robber, suffering deep trauma and believing he must “cleanse” the world of the wicked during the holidays. He kidnaps a group of “naughty” people—including a corrupt politician and a fraudulent businessman—hanging them around the Rockefeller tree, preparing a public execution in front of the tree-lighting crowd.
Castle and Beckett infiltrate the area. Castle uses his horror knowledge to predict: “He’ll use an axe, just like original Billy!” Intense action: A chase on the ice skating rink, gunfire amid twinkling Christmas lights, blinding snow. Beckett confronts the killer atop the tree, using psychology to distract him: “You’re not Billy. You can stop. Christmas is about forgiveness, not revenge.” Castle rushes in to save Beckett from the falling axe, and together they subdue him.
The killer is arrested, whispering to Castle: “You understand me, writer. You write about killing every day.” Castle replies: “No, I write to stop it. To bring real justice.” The case closes, and the team breathes a sigh of relief.

Back at the loft on Christmas morning, the family gathers to open gifts under the tree. Castle gives Beckett a new manuscript: “Nikki Heat: Silent Night, Deadly Night”—she playfully scolds him with a smile. Martha tells funny stories, Alexis hugs her parents, the little ones play. Beckett looks out at the falling snow, whispering to Castle: “This is real Christmas.” They kiss under the mistletoe as church bells ring. Post-credits: A strange email to Castle from “S. Claus”— “See you next year?”—hinting at a new case.
